Maybe Baby Discussion Monday

Is law school the right time to have a baby?
Is it a bad idea to have a child as a new associate in a law firm?
What are the pros and cons of juggling law school with a baby in tow?
Join us for an informal discussion at 12:30 Monday, March 3, in room 207. We have two featured guests. One is a first-year associate at Davis Wright Tremaine who had a baby the summer before she started work at her firm. The other is a second-year associate at a smaller firm who had a baby during her 3L year.
Members of Parents Attending Law School who had babies during school also will be there to lend perspective. This discussion is open to everyone. Lunch will be provided. If you’re thinking of coming, please drop me a note so I can get an estimate of our food needs. Also email if you’d like to submit questions anonymously ahead of time. Send emails to Lisa Kremer, kremerl@...

Pals quarterly meeting Tuesday -- free food

Dear PALS,
I will soon be leaving UWLS, and quite honestly, Lisa's draconian reign of terror has gone on long enough. Therefore, I encourage you all to elect new leadership at our quarterly meeting next Tuesday, March 4 at 12:30, in room 116. If you don't, a great power vacuum will exist . . . and nature abhors a vacuum (as does Louis Butler).
As an additional incentive, we will provide lunch. Hope to see you there.

$1,638 raised for Athay scholarship fund

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Oliver Athay Scholarship Fund. We raised a total of $1,638! Students, faculty and staff all contributed. Oliver is the 1-year-old son of Ben Athay, who was a 1L last year and made an impression on many as a great student and upbeat new dad. Ben died of a brain hemorrhage last summer. Our gift to Oliver’s fund will be made in the name of PALS and Friends of PALS. If you’d like to contribute on your own, here’s the info:

Childhaven drive this week

This week is the Childhaven drive! Please bring in new or gently used toys, clothes and books, plus diapers and nonperishable food items. You’ll see the PALS table in the hallway at lunch this week. If you’d like to staff the table, just come on by, sit down, and keep folks company.

Everyone please give many thanks to Christine Porter for organizing the Childhaven Drive this year. Christine has put it together almost single-handedly. Be sure to give her a pat on the back. Thanks also to Laura Arras, who made the poster, and Ray for posting them, and everyone who's staffing the table and making the delivery on Friday. We'll have the table in the hallway at lunch all week.

Childhaven is a Seattle childcare and research center that works to break the cycle of abuse and neglect by helping families in crisis. The center focuses on children birth to 5 years old and their families. Our annual Childhaven drive was started by last year's co-presidents, Merisa Heu-Weller and Greg Wong, who believed that as law students we're awfully lucky, and we want to share some of our good fortune with others. For more information on Childhaven, check childhaven.org -- or tell Christine that you'd like to come along on Friday to drop off the goodies. Visitors will get a tour of the facility. The Oliver Athay scholarship fund

This week we're collecting contributions for the Oliver Athay scholarship fund. Oliver is Ben's 1-year-old son. We'd like to make a contribution on behalf of PALS, to honor Ben's involvement with our group. If you'd like to contribute, there is an envelope on the table where we're collecting donations for Childhaven.

However, if you contribute this way, you won't be able to deduct it on your taxes. If you'd like to contribute directly to the fund, here's the info:
